What are stadium flares?

We recently attended the World Port Days in Rotterdam. One of the most discussed topics was undoubtedly the“stadium flares. Since there is a lot of confusion about this term, we decided to write a number of articles to look into this in more detail. Herewith part 1: What are stadium flares?
The product“Stadium flares” does not exist. It is a vernacular name for all sorts of other types of flares used mainly in sports stadiums, especially at soccer matches. This is where they derive the nickname. They create an impressive visual spectacle by giving off bright lights or thick clouds of smoke. These torches are often used by supporters to create atmosphere, and are known for their strong association with soccer hooliganism. All such use is not permittedby the government and thus prohibited by law. To make things extra confusing; there are also legal ways they can be used, and this does happen with great regularity.
Why are stadium flares used?
Stadium torches are used to create a unique atmosphere in sports stadiums, especially during soccer games. Their fiery glow and clouds of smoke create an impressive visual element that is often part of the supporter tradition. These effects cannot be matched in any other way. This makes stadium flares a hugely popular topic among the public, which only adds to the issues surrounding them. In addition to use in soccer stadiums, they are symbolic during celebrations, funerals, protests and concerts.
Key features of stadium flares:
- They emit bright, colorful light or smoke, making them perfect for large crowds.
- They can vary in burn time, color and intensity depending on the type.
- Stadium flares are often part of organized pyro shows in stadiums.
Main reasons for use:
- Enhancing the supporter experience and atmosphere during games.
- Marking special moments, such as goals or winning a game.
- Communicating emotions and team spirit among supporters.
Different types of stadium flares:
As mentioned earlier, stadium flares are not a product. The nickname covers different types of stadium flares, each serving a different purpose. The most common types are:
- Bengal Fire: This type of torch gives off a small, yet bright, colorful light and is commonly sold as a gag and party firework. People use bengal fire to increase the excitement and joy of an event. This bengal fire can be described as the super-light version of real emergency flares.
- Smoking Torches: These flares produce thick clouds of smoke and are especially visible during the day, making them ideal for use to get noticed.
- Wax flares and fire torches: These flares are often used at events that focus more on atmosphere and lighting, such as festivals and weddings. These are not at all similar to distress flares, yet business owners gratefully take advantage of the confusion to do market them to the public.
Key differences between the torches:
- Bengal fire provides bright light and intensity.
- Smoke torches are ideal for daytime use because of their visible smoke signals.
- Fire torches provide warmth and illumination during outdoor activities.
